A BRIEF SEAT DOWN WITH THE ZCASEBA VICE PRESIDENT

ZCAS-M.I.T had a chance to interview the current ZCAS Economics Business Association Vice President, Luyando Nkolola.

Though only twenty minutes in length, we were  able to get a few of  her  perspectives on certain matters such as her recognition of the importance of facilitating interactions between students and the corporate world  considering her own experience with  interning at an accountancy firm.

“I have my own experience in the corporate society…It’s hard, it’s hectic but with the right guidance, especially from your peers it makes it really easier and way more interesting. So through my position, I help the president by insuring that we have enough people from the corporate world come through to give advice and career tips on what we really need to know.”

This is true considering how raw and inexperienced a recent graduate can be in a merciless corporate world that waits on no one when it comes to innovation and opportunity, as these interactions help create chance for potential internship recruitment or employment right on our school door step.

Good examples of the associations’ efforts would be a financial literacy week seminar held on the 25th of March, 2022 which was Head lined by Investment expert Lyapa Mbewe and sponsored by Professional insurance which the Vice highlighted as one of her favorite ZCASEBA moments, due the high student turnout at the event.

She mentioned having to master Courage, Integrity, Confidence and Loyalty when further asked about backing up her President, as she brought up the morality and ethics she was taught to strive towards from her home upbringing and educational background.  She stated that these attributes are necessary to attempt to live by as she would not be able to assist the President and lead the association without them.

Concerning people who help her in her endeavors such as balancing between her internship, studies and leadership position, even in her lowest of times, she mentioned various people such as her mentors Dr. Namukale Chintu who encouraged her to join ZCASEBA and Mrs. Nana Chansa who motivated and helped her find her internship. Lastly was her Mother of whom she said

“Let me not forget my mother, who plays a very important role every single day by reminding me that I should not give up in anything I do… I should keep on working hard and soldering on, because if I fail, it’s going to create a notion that females can’t do it all. They can’t run an association; they can’t be the Vice President of an association.…”

She went further on by talking about how she has the responsibility of being a good example for her younger siblings and how her mother literally wakes her up every single day and even studies right by her side, reminding the 21 Year old that its’ not easy having all these responsibilities on her plate at such a young age but that she has to “be strong and prove to the world that even young girls can take on leadership roles and make a big impact ...”

There you go, a brief insight of what was talked about the day of the interview.

What are your thoughts? Are you going to take note of Miss Nkolola’s experience and be more proactive in extracurricular activities? Do you feel  lost or like quitting and  need a mentor for guidance?  And finally, are you appreciating the people in your life enough?
