HOW WELL DO YOU KNOW YOUR LAW?

 

Last year, upon being asked an impromptu question concerning the current challenges faced within Zambia's legal diaspora,which stated:

 “What are your thoughts on how different Zambian statutes identify the same or similar wrongful acts, but give different punishments or sanctions?”

This was their response;

(Statutes are formal, written regulations created by legislative bodies based on agreement among top officials. A statute's main function is to order, forbid, or establish a policy.)

 

The ZCAS University Law Association outgoing Executive referred to how the constitution is the supreme law of the land, thus in circumstances where the penal code has a section that goes against what’s stated in the constitution, it will automatically become null and void.

To add on, Zambia has a dual legal system and most of our statutes are duplicates of those from the United Kingdom (U.K).This means when Zambian lawmakers establish a law adopted from the U.K, we end up with different repercussions for the same or similar illegal acts.

There you have it, a little deep dive into the technicalities of Zambian legislature.
