AN INSIGHT FROM THE LAW ASSOCIATION VICE PRESIDENT
ZCAS-M.I.T had an
opportunity to seat down with the ZCAS-U Law Association Vice President,
Tiyamike Phiri. The brief interview concerned her duties as a leader as well as
her personal views on the association in general…
“Using
my own words? I would say it was something made by the students, for the
students to benefit the students… The law students in particular”
This can be considered
true given the mission of the association in its quest to better the academic
journey of law students through different forms of exposure to the various
aspects of their career paths.
Further proof would be
the gains Miss Phiri highlighted when questioned on her favorite thing about
the association given her position.
“I would say exposure,
and the fact that I get to learn from everyone else…”
“I mean when you’re
just a member you don’t see everything directly but then when you’re gifted
with this opportunity, you get to work hand in hand with the lecturers and even
with other lawyers and firms… so it’s the interaction and exposure for me”
All this and more led
to a question concerning foreign participation
in association activities. When asked about this, the Vice President openly
encouraged it. Highlighting how a diversification of one’s expertise could
create all sorts of future opportunities such as easier approaches towards
entrepreneurship ventures due to proper understanding of the law that regulates
them.
This would mean that individuals and small businesses would more likely be safe from any city council or Zambia Revenue Authority probes/investigations due to having all their documentation and books in order. You could even say this could ease spending on legal consultation fees.
But the most important
thing to highlight would actually be that we would have more citizens being
literate on legal matters which would reduce the levels of manipulation people
face in society in relation to things such as employment /working conditions or
even land squabbles that seem to be a challenge in the country.
We would also see
better and more active participation in issues concerning activities such as
constitutional amendments, with us seeing more desirable laws that truly reflect
the needs and wants of the people in the years to come.
Such a discussion would
need its own time to be properly analyzed but this is where we will
unfortunately be ending our journey.
What’s your take, do
you agree that our country needs better understanding of legal matters? Are
you going to take up the Vice President’s offer? Share your views in the
comments section.
